Driver Beware, Shire of Exmouth - $17904.70

The Shire of Exmouth is keen to purchase a speed alert display trailer for use on the roads with in the shire. There has been a steady increase in visitors to Exmouth over the last few years, now up to 150,000 people a year, with a steady seasonal population of 6,000 people. The majority of visitors are in holiday mode and become relaxed with their adherence to the road rules or from overseas and are not familiar with the environment they are travelling in. The incidents of speeding, lack of the use of restraints, fatigue and drink driving has increase with in the township and on the open road. We believe the speed alert display trailer would be a vital tool with the road safety campaigns in reducing the incidents of speeding, alert drivers of restraint usage, driver reviver stops and assist with curving drink driving. The speed alert display trailer will be a great benefit for road construction projects with in the shire as the trailer is large and visible reminder of the reduced speed for road construction area. Having the speed alert display trailer at the construction site will help reduce the chance of incidents accruing that put road workers and other road uses at risk. With the data collected by the speed alert display trailer the shire management can see what road control management measures may need to be implemented. The speed alert display trailer would be a great asset in Exmouth town centre and in the school zones to alert drivers of the 40kms/h and the pedestrian traffic around the shopping centre. Another example of the way the speed alert display trailer would be used by the shire is in emergency situations such as fires, road accidents and major storm incidents. The speed alert display trailer would be able to be used as a visual warning display to motorists and the community of the situation.

Esperance Safe Speed Project, Esperence RoadWise Committee - $33,787.00

The Esperance Roadwise Committee, and the Community in general, are concerned at the incidence of Inappropriate speeds both in town and in the outlying areas. Esperance Police have identified a number of ‘hot spots’ for speed in the town, particularly in residential areas, and the highways into the town are also areas for concern. Our community has a large percentage of young children, so speed in residential areas is of particular concern. Three of our 4 primary schools and one of two high schools are located on main arterial roads and although there are designated 40km school zones, the incidence of speed is still high.Local Government has been identified as a key player in educating the community about the implications of speed limit reductions on crash outcomes, so the full support of the Esperance Shire with this project is appropriate. The Esperance Community Safe Speed Project will encompass a number of aspects: 1. Implementation of the Community Safe Speed Promise 2. Purchase of a Speed Alert Mobile 3. Expansion of the Slow Down Consider out Kids Bin Sticker Project

Community Safe Speed Promise, City of Stirling and City of Joondalup -$48,610.00

The Community Safe Speed Promise is based on an existing project, the Neighbourhood Pace Car Pledge and works like a treaty between communities; stating "we will act as a guest in your community if you act as a guest in outs". This is a new way for the community and the Local Governments to take control of road safety in their local streets. Resident participation is the conerstone of the initiative. The initiative asks residents to sign a Safe Speed Promise and commit to driving with the speed limit and being a courteous driver. The City of Joondalup will provide a bumper sticker for those residents who sign so they are easily identifiable and can set an example for other motorists to follow. Intensive promotion of the program through local media, local gov mediums and community groups that highlights the value of th program will be used to recruit participants. When safe speed promise drivers slow down, they reduce the impact of their car use on the communities they drive through and encourage following cares to observe the speed limits. Having a small percentage of vehicles driving the speed limit city-wide is expected to start a positive cycle. Additionally, people may feel more comfortable walking or cycling, which reduces traffic level, making streets even safer to walk or cycle
