Funded Grants Round 8 January 2009
Reducing Travel Speeds in the Shires of Wickepin and Cuballing, Shire of Wickepin - $18,737.90
The Shires of Wickepin and Cuballing have identified speeding, particularly through local towns as a significant issue in the area. The two shires would like to purchase a mobile speed alert trailer to compliment existing road safety and driver education initiatives in the area. The safe road user behaviour message has had limited reinforcement since the closure of the Wickepin Police Station in 2007. Anecdotal evidence suggests that speeding, especially through the towns, and drink driving has increased with the lack of police presence. The speed display trailer would be used in the towns of Wickepin, Harrismith, Tincurrin, Yealering, Cuballing and Popanyinning. All of these towns are located on main highways and tourist routes in the Upper Great Southern region. The trailer would also be used at community events, in school zones and at road works to promote positive driver behaviour. The roads and highways in the two shires are frequently used by heavy vehicle grain cartage trucks to reduce speed especially through towns.
