Funded Grants Round 12 May 2007
"Motoring community to slow down" within the Town of Bassendean - Town of Bassendean - $18,828.00
The Town of Bassendean aims to encourage motorists, and the community as a whole, to take active responsibility, "ownership', in reducing speed on local roads within the Town of Bassendean. We will do this through the implementation of a community education strategy that fosters and supports community participation and ownership of speed issues within our community.
The town has set up a reference group whose main aim is to spread the message about safe speeds through various mediums to the community. In particular the emphasis will be on adding realism to the road side messages displayed throughout the town.
The main objectives will be the planning and enforcement of these messages through traffic calming devices, using the speed traffic trailer in strategic locations and times (commencement of school term and selected periods, road works, community events, community facilities, shopping centres and identified streets and roads where speed concerns are relevant).
Furthermore the display and distribution of Office of Road Safety promtional material through the town's community facilities, web page and during community planned activities such as the milticultural food festival and Australia Day celebrations and fireworks. Coordination of police enforcement activities and the encouragement of the community to take ownership of their streets through the opening of communication channels between the reference group and local residences in the strategic planning for the display of the speed trailer.
