Funded Grants Round 1 June 2004

1. Derby RoadWise Committee - Derby Croc Festival 2004 - $2,770.00

This project will involve the Derby RoadWise Committee working in partnership with the Aboriginal Festivals of Australia’s Croc Festival to promote and raise the awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving, non-use of seatbelts and riding in the open load space amongst primary and secondary school students attending the Croc Festival in Derby from 10th – 12th August 2004. This event is attended by approximately 2500 people over the three days.

The Croc Festival® is an innovative event that builds partnerships in regional and remote communities by celebrating youth culture. Involving young Aboriginal & non-Aboriginal Australians in visual and performing arts, sports clinics, careers markets in a 100 per cent drug and alcohol free environment the festival promotes health, education and employment in a spirit of reconciliation. The primary target group for this event will be Aboriginal males and females, aged 10 - 17 years. The 2003 Derby Croc Festival was attended by 31 schools with 880 participants, 200 supervisors and an estimated audience of 4000 people. Many of the students who come to this event are from remote Aboriginal community schools who often do not get opportunities to learn about road safety issues. It is hoped that by promoting the dangers of riding in the open load space, non-use of seatbelts and drinking and driving at such an event the messages will penetrate our target group. Approximately 1000 Aboriginal people from 37 rural and remote Aboriginal Communities have registered their interest to make the trip into town to participate in the festival in 2004. This group of people live in remote areas up to 1000 kilometres from Derby and it is difficult to get messages and information about drink and driving out to this group. The Croc Festival will be an opportune time to achieve this. The Derby RoadWise Committee plan to set up an interactive display at the three-day event.

Activities at this event will include:

  • Chocolate wheel with road safety questions & prizes
  • Road Safety slogan competition prior to event to determine road safety messages on promotional merchandise.
  • Seatbelts and riding in the back of utes display/activity (with remote control cars, eggs and elastic bands)
  • Fatal Vision goggles (for students 16 yrs or older)
  • Educational and promotional material about drinking and driving, riding in the open load space and wearing seatbelts will also be available for participants to take away.

This event coincides with the Road Safety Council’s State Drink Driving Campaign, which runs from 4th July – 21st August 2004.

2. Quairading RoadWise Committee - Quairading’s Road Safety Program 2004 - $8,550.00

This initiative of the Quairading RoadWise Committee aims to implement a number of activities in the Shire of Quairading targeting Non-Use of Restraints, Speed and Drink Driving.

3. City of Gosnells RoadWise Committee - Child Car Restraint Checking – Maddington Centro - $664.00

The child car restraint project will seek to both educate and impart practical skills to parents, grandparents and other carers who are responsible for transporting children (in personal motor vehicles) through a child restraint checking station at  Metro Centro shopping centre in September 2004. This will be promoted in the local paper, through local schools and child care centres as well as in the shopping centre.

4. Geraldton/Greenough RoadWise Committee - Geraldton Entertainment Guide - $8,800.00

The Golden West Network Western Australia’s number 1 regional television station has long recognised the need to be community based and help to promote the businesses of our local areas to ensure the towns within the state prosper and continue to grow from strength to strength. With the way of the world today and the everyday dangers that are relevant in society, more and more people are deciding to stay at home and why not with all that this state has to offer. As well as being a guide to the people of Geraldton as to what is happening around town, it is also a way to remind them not to Drink and Drive and to participate in the Skipper program and to not become a Drink Driving statistic.

In the Mid West region – 16% of all serious crashes had at least one driver (or rider) with a BAC of 0.05% or over – compared to 11% for all of Western Australia. Also, when looking at the community attitude monitors for 2000 – in the Mid West region, 10% of participants were not aware of what the BAC limit was. With this in mind, this opportunity to promote the Skipper program is one not to be missed.

5. Morawa RoadWise Committee - Road Safety Banner Art Project - $10,174.00

The Morawa RoadWise Committee Road Safety Banner Art Project is an initiative to be run through the committee to engage different groups from within the community by promoting road safety messages through art. It is envisaged that the banners will be designed and painted to reflect the State Road Safety Strategy and address the issues of Speeding, Drink Driving, Fatigue and non-use of Restraints within the Shire of Morawa and surrounding areas. The Shire of Morawa is situated in the North Midlands area due North of Perth and East South East of Geraldton. It is joined by the Shires of Mullewa to the North, Perenjori to the South, Mingenew and Three Springs to the West and Yalgoo to the East. The population of the Morawa townsite is estimated at 600 people and 460 for the rest of the Shire. About 3% of the population are Aboriginal.

The banners will be a welcome addition whilst at the same time reiterating the road safety message to locals and tourists travelling through the area. A concerted effort is being made to improve the appearance and ambience of Morawa. A Townscape concept plan has been developed by the Morawa Townscape Committee and the members of the community have a lot of pride towards the townscape of Morawa. We have planned to design banners through different groups – namely Youth, Seniors, Morawa Football Club, Morawa Netball and Hockey Teams, Police, Local Government, RoadWise committee and other community based groups within the Shire. Whilst the production of the banners takes place, those who are participating will also be educated on the dangers of the road safety issues being addressed. The banners will be changed in accordance to the Road Safety Priority Planner designed by the Road Safety Council. During these campaigns when the banners are on display, there will be information regarding the current campaigns placed in the Morawa Scene that is published fortnightly and the school newsletter also. We will run competitions through the Morawa Scene asking questions about the campaign and a prize will be given out each campaign. 2 x $50 vouchers to businesses in town will be awarded each campaign (1 Female and 1 Male prize) encouraging people to participate in the returning of surveys.
