Funded Grants Round 9 February 2011
City of Mandurah, Mandurah Speed Display Trailer - $20,000
The City of Mandurah has shared a speed display trailer with Shire of Murray and Waroona for the past five years to promote safe driving practices in the Peel district. Sharing the trailer with the Shires of Murray and Waroona obviously restricts the availability as both these areas have a programme for placement which often conflicts with the City's demand. This application is to enable the City of Mandurah to relinquish the use of this shared trailer and to apply for a new one dedicated to our requirements at all times.
Wanslea Family Services, Wanslea Family Services CCR - $5,000
Wanslea will purchase 25 child car restraints to loan to Wanslea foster carers enabling them to safely transport foster children in their care. All of our carers are volunteers and many are on low incomes including some on Centrelink benefits and the subsidy paid only covers the basic necessities of care. In 2010 Wanslea provided foster care for 260 children with 94% of the children aged eight and under. It is imperative that foster carers have the age appropriate child car restraints to transport them safely. It is anticipated that Wanslea's number of foster carers will increase by about 15% in 2011 resulting in an even greater need for child car restraints. Foster carers have an essential role in transporting children in their care to child care, school, medical and specialist appointments. Given the recent changes in legislation, using an appropriate child car restraint for the 0-7 age group is now mandatory. Many of our foster carers look after two or three children at a time in the under eight age range, meaning that they require more than one car restraint at any one time. This grant will enable us to purchase child car restraints and loan these items to our foster carers on a as needs basis ensuring the safety of those children placed in Wansleas care.
