Funded Grants Round 4 September 2010

Wundowie Police, Wundowie Child Car Restraints Hire Programme - $2,910.00
Wundowie is a unique town which is keen to tackle road safety issues that continue to present an issue within the community. The Wundowie community has about 1000 permanent residents with about 120 children attending the local school. Wundowie is also service by a child care centre. The community and Shire (Community Resource Centre) supported by local Police, who are pro-active and community focused within the area are keen to reduce the incidents and level of serious injuries and fatalities on our roads. This application is designed to establish the Wundowie Child Car Restraints Hire Programme. The Programme will assist community members who may not have the financial means to purchase car seats, booster seats or harnesses to engage in a hire arrangement with the Programme Co-ordinator for use of the restraint item, to comply with legislative changes. It is deemed appropriate that a monthly hire fee will be charged and collected until the full price of the restraint is collected. Given this arrangement the sustainability of the project is virtually assured. The Restraints aspects of this application will be complemented by: a) awareness raising education aimed at children and their carers with regards to changes in legislation for child car restraints b) support programmes through schools and child care centres via SDERA programs c) provision of checking stations d) enforcement

Shire of Irwin, Irwin - Safe Speed Initiative - $15,900.00
The Shire of Irwin has identified that speed is a behaviour that is exhibited throughout the region and needs to be addressed. The Speed Display Trailer is seen as a tool that can be used in the region to educate the community and raise awareness of the consequences of speeding and also reduce incidences of speeding within the district. The Speed Trailer will be based in Irwin but made available to surrounding shires as needed. The Shire of Irwin has borrowed the Mingenew trailer in past years but feels that the resource would be able to be used on an almost full time basis around the Irwin Shire. The fact that the Speed Display Trailer has a visual impact is seen as being beneficial to the community in stimulating interest and promoting discussion around the concerns of people exceeding the speed limits. It is planned that the Speed Trailer will be used in conjunction with other road safety activities and projects that focus on countering incidences of speeding. Some of these planned activities include: Use at social events in Irwin, for example, the Dongara Races and Dongara Festival.Use around planned roadwork’s by the Shire. Location around school zones at back to school periods.Supporting enforcement by local police. Supporting media articles relating to speed in local paper. Location at interactive displays held by the Irwin RoadWise committee. Use in conjunction with the Irwin Driver Reviver. Placement on roads that have been identified as zones where speeding occurs. Information and educational materials will be provided by the MidWest Regional Road Safety Officer. This information will be used in displays at events mentioned above and also in articles in local newspapers.
