Funded Grants Round 6 November 2009

Shire of Yilgarn, Driver Reviver Van - $25,000.00
It is believed that the concept of the Driver Reviver Van originated in the Shire Yilgarn as a road safety initiative, with the first Van commencing operation in the Yilgarn district on the Great Eastern Highway during the Easter period of 1996. The success of this venture resulted in many other Driver Reviver Vans coming into operation over the past thirteen years. The Driver Reviver Program in the Yilgarn is run in conjunction with Shire of Yilgarn, Health Agencies of the Yilgarn and RoadWise and is manned by volunteers of the Yilgarn Community. The Driver Reviver Program is run over Christmas and Easter periods as well public and school holidays. The Driver Reviver Van is also utilised during major events held in the Yilgarn district of which attract large crowds eg, “King of the Cross” motocross event and the Yilgarn Agricultural Show. The Driver Reviver Van and Program helps promote road safety and encourages members of the motoring public travelling through Southern Cross to stop, partake in refreshments and rest to help reduce driver fatigue. The Driver Reviver Program has been running successfully for thirteen years in Southern Cross and is run from a caravan which was purchased by the Shire of Yilgarn and converted for the purpose of the Driver Reviver Program. The caravan was built in 1974 and is now starting to show its age to the point where it has become un-road worthy. For the Driver Reviver Program to continue to operate, there is an urgent requirement to have the current caravan replaced. The grant that is being applied for is to assist with the purchase of a new van so as the Driver Reviver Program can continue in the Yilgarn district to promote road safety.

RTRFM 92.1, RTRFMs Fresh Blast 2010 Program - $12,580.00
The Fresh Balst Program has a long history of promoting health messages in combination with promoting local bands/performers. In 2008 Fresh Blast received a significant grant from the Community Road Safety Grants program; through this the Fresh Blast audience associates the Dont Drink and Drive message with the program. The Fresh Blast program will help 12 quality local bands/performers launch and release their debut EP or album. The program provides the bands with promotional opportunities though radio and print media, as well as providing a fantastic and credible means to communicate an anti drink driving message to hundreds of thousands of at risk young Perth adults. Fresh Blast and RTRFM 92.1 are brands that Perth’s young local music industry are proud to be associated with, and combining these cool and credible brands with health and safety messages has already proven to be very influential. The Fresh Blast launches were used with great effect to introduce anti-smoking messages in WA music venues, leading to anti-smoking legislation.

Shire of Broome, Community Safe Speed Promise "Don't Zoom in Broome" - $11,790.00
The Community Safe Speed Promise is based on an existing project, the Neighbourhood Pace Car Pledge and works like a treaty between communities; stating “we will act as a guest in your community if you act as a guest in ours“. This is a new way for the community and the Local Governments to take control of road safety on their local streets. Resident participation is the cornerstone of the initiative. The initiative asks residents to sign a Safe Speed Promise and commit to driving within the speed limit and being a courteous driver. The Shire of Broome will provide a bumper sticker for those residents who sign so they are easily identifiable and can set an example for other motorists to follow. Intensive promotion of the program through local media, Local Government mediums and community groups that highlights the value of the program will be used to recruit participants. hen Safe Speed Promise drivers slow down, they reduce the impact of their car use on the communities they drive through and encourage following cars to observe the speed limits. Having a small percentage of vehicles driving the speed limit throughout the shire is expected to start a positive cycle. People feel more comfortable walking or cycling, which reduces traffic levels, making streets even safer to walk or cycle.

Wyndham Police, Be Safe - Be Seen Wyndham Pedestrian Project - $11,400.00
One of the main reasons pedestrians die on our roads is because motorists don't see them until it is too late or they step out from areas hidden to the motorist. This project aims to reduce the number of Aboriginal pedestrian fatalities and injuries, change pedestrian behaviours and attitudes and improve environmental conditions for pedestrians (particularly at night) in Wyndham. A collaborative approach between WA Police, the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley, local liquor licencees, the Wyndham RoadWise Committee and other indigenous organisations  will implement a combination of environmental, community development and mass media strategies. Project outcomes included environmental improvements such as street lighting and footpaths, the distribution of reflective wrist bands and hats to the target group, broadcasting of advertisements, distribution of educational material and engaging indigenous organisations to empower the target group to “look after their mates”. By local agencies working together to implement strategies, it will be possible to achieve improvements in the safety of the walking environment in Wyndham.

Lake Grace RoadWise Committee, Reviving the Drivers - $12,400.00
The Lake Grace Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Lake Grace Lions Club have coordinated a driver reviver over a number of years during many long weekends including Easter and Christmas. The Current Driver Reviver Van that has been in operation over the past years is in a state of disrepair and needs to be replaced. The Lake Grace Roadwise Committee believe that with a better van and improved signage, numbers stopping to use the facility will increase. The grant funds will be used to purchase a new van and create new signage that is easier to see, particularly for night time drivers. Both the Lake Grace RoadWise Committee and the Lake Grace Lions Club feel that their efforts have been invaluable in creating awareness and combating fatigue in those drivers that have made the decision to stop.
