Funded Grants Round 1 June 2009
Broome Soccer Association, Broome Soccer Association Stay Awake, Take a Break - $14,005.00
The Broome Soccer Association project aims to contribute towards the Road Safety Council’s long term vision of eliminating road crashes as a major cause of premature death and injury in Western Australia. Specifically it will focus on promoting “fatigue” travelling on roads in and around Broome, Western Australia. This will involve encouraging members of the Broome Soccer Association to adopt “safer road user” travelling behaviour when driving on roads such as highways, outback gravel roads. The program will aim to promote its “safe road user and fatigue” message to the wider Broome community. The project also aims to reinforce the “driver reviver” message through active promotions on the Great Northern Highway during the year. This element of the project is aimed at helping educate some of the thousands of long distance travellers that flock to Broome each year.
Shire of Carnarvon, Speed and fatigue can be fatal - $19,017.90
The North West Coastal Highway. is a very busy commercial transport root supplying the growing mining industry in the north of the state with heavy plant and equipment. Also NWCH is the only coastal road connecting a number of popular tourist destinations up the Western Australian coast bringing an estimated 200,000 people through Carnarvon, with the main visitation during the cooler month and school holiday period. However during the hot summer months sees visitors from overseas who are travelling in the heat and on a limited time table. The developments in our north this has brought with it an influx of mine workers and contractors, although basically fly in fly out we are seeing a large number driving the 1537 kms from Perth to Karratha and returning by road on their time off or travelling to and from contracts. The vast areas of open straight roads and with a scenery that dose not change much, this bring on speeding due to the boredom, the urge to reach their destination, tiredness and false sense of security that creates complacency that justifies high speed over looking the risks to other road uses, possible animal strikes, and tyre failure, that can all lead to tragic outcome. The incidents of speeding, lack of the use of restraints, fatigue and drink driving has also increase in Carnarvon and on the open roads. We believe the speed alert display trailer would be a vital tool with the road safety campaigns in reducing the incidents of speeding, and alert drivers of restraint usage, driver reviver stops and assist with curving drink driving and fatigue driving The speed alert display trailer will also be a great benefit in road construction and maintenance projects within the shire. The trailer is a large and visible reminder to reduced speed for road construction areas and help reduce the chance of incidents accruing that put road workers and other road uses at risk. With the data collected by the speed alert display trailer the shire management can see what road control management measures may need to be implemented The speed alert display trailer would be a great asset in the Carnarvon town centre and used in the school zones to alert drivers of the 40kms/h, and to be aware of pedestrian traffic around the shopping centres. Another example of the way the speed alert display trailer would be used by the shire is in emergency situations such as fires, road accidents and major storm/flood incidents. The speed alert display trailer would be able to be used as a visual warning display to motorists and the community of the situation.
Broome Saints Football Club, Saints are deadly on the fields and play it safe on the road - $3,100.00
Broome Saints Football Club (BSFC) has 50 registered players in its senior team and around 70 players in three junior teams. The Club also has a wide membership and supporter base. Statistically, the club’s young indigenous players are more likely to suffer road trauma than other Australians, which makes BSFC ideally placed to change attitudes and behaviours in the killer trifecta of drink driving, speeding and not wearing seatbelts. The project is over three years and will involve educating members about the risks of drink driving, speeding and how seatbelts can save lives. These messages will be actively promoted at training, games and special events. Guest speakers will also be invited to the club to discuss road safety issues. The club will also implement road safety policies and make road safety part of their club culture. The Road Safety Trailer will be used at club games and at functions. It will assist with the carriage of gear to and from games, display road safety messages at games and around the town of Broome, and It is intended club members will provide assistance to the Broome Driver Reviver project.
Richmond Primary School P+C, Please slow down - consider our kids - bin sticker initiative - $3,200.00
This proposal seeks funding for “Please slow down - consider our kids” stickers to be placed on wheelie bins in the community associated with Richmond Primary School in East Fremantle. The project addresses “Safe speeds”, and “Safe road use”, two of the four cornerstones of the “WA Road Safety Strategy 2008-2020 Towards Zero”. This initiative is part of Richmond School’s P&C Roadwise campaign, based upon the Community Road Safety Project Model, with leadership from our P&C “Roadwise” Coordinator. It has the full endorsement of the School Principal and staff, and active support from the East Fremantle Town Council. In addition, the P&C will augment the bin sticker initiative by drawing attention to the need for drivers to lower speeds and be aware of children travelling and playing in the locality, through articles in the school newsletter and local community newspapers. The Office of Road Safety’s Fact Sheet on 50km/hr speed limits states “Research indicates that, in built-up areas, risk of involvement in a serious crash doubles with each 5 km/h increase in speed above the posted speed limit.” We believe our community can make a difference through our Roadwise campaign.
