Funded Grants Round 8 January 2008
Drop 5, Save Lives - City of Bayswater - $25,229.00
The trailer will be positioned outside schools in the Bayswater area each week during school terms on a rotating basis (2 schools per week). At all other times during the week the trailer will be used to target roads identified as 'hot spots' for speeding to reduce travel speeds on those roads.
Evaluation surveys will be conducted through the schools as well as with the wider public which will reinforce the message.
Positioning the trailer in school zones shall complement the existing trailer being used on roads that have been identified as areas of concern and road maintenance areas. In addition to these times the trailer shall also be used/displayed at events such as Autumn River Festival, Avon Descent, Early Settlers Lunch and around street festivals. The trailer shall also be available for use by neighbouring councils, police and community groups.
Think first and arrive safe in rural WA - Shire of Pingelly - $18,500.00
The Shire of Pingelly, in conjunction with the surrounding Shires of Wandering, Brookton and Beverley, are targeting a more visual appearance, to its residents and motorists, in relation to lowering speeding around local schools and highways, information messages such as 'belt up' and 'don't drink and drive' at community events and the consequences of these incidences.
The main roads of concern, which have been highlighted by police records, are the Great Southern Hwy, Brookton Hwy and the South Wandering Rd, plus roads that surround our primary schools such as Park St, Parade St, Queen St and Stone St in Pingelly, Gordon and White Sts in Brookton, Westdale and Forrest Rds in Beverley and Wandering North, Turton and Mill Sts in Wandering.
We believe that a more visual approach and impact is more beneficial and also working in conjunction with Pingelly Police will target known black spots and improve safety. We would also be using the speed trailer during heavy haulage peak seasons such as harvest which runs from November through to January, to alert truck drivers to speeds, fatigue and condequences. Currently there are driver reviver stops in Brookton and Pingelly and this can be promoted by displaying the message on the speed trailer. During road works the speed trailer would also be a valuable tool to advise motorists of upcoming works currently being undertaken and the relevant speeds they need to be driving at.
We plan to have the trailer stored and the coordination of its loan in Pingelly with each surrounding Shire ringing and booking the trailer as per a pre determined schedule.
Supporting Road Safety in Dowerin, Goomalling and Wyalkatchem - Shire of Dowerin - $17,129.00
The communities of Dowerin, Goomalling and Wyalkatchem identified speeding and road safety as priorities to be addressed in their Regional Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan (currently with the Office of Crime Prevention). The purchase of a mobile speed alert trailer, to be shared between the three shires, will reinforce and promote positive driver behaviour and attitudes. It will also be utilised in conjunction with special events and emergency situations to alert motorists of hazards ahead. Its mobility allows easy movement between the three shires.
