Funded Grants Round 4 September 2007
Fatal Vision Goggles - South West Community Drug Service Team - $1,760.00
The impact of drink driving and drug driving on individuals and families is a serious issue that needs to be addressed through a multilayered approach. Targeting young people, who are at risk, either by their own alcohol and drug use or the others' use, is paramount to reducing the carnage on our roads and the destruction of families. In order to promote the dangers of drink/drug driving. i would like to organise an event at the South West Regional College of TAFE, Bunbury Campus, involving purchasing a set of Fatal Vision Goggles. Purchasing these goggles would not only enable the event to be held, it would also enable the SWCDST to utilise the goggles during presentations conducted at local schools and workplaces for the purpose of education adn minimising the incidents of drink/drug driving through the provision of practical intervention.
Northampton Driver Reviver - Lions Club - $10,980.30
The Northampton Lions Club are organising a Driver Reviver Program to encourage drivers to stop, revive and then drive on trips away. We hope to raise drivers' awareness of fatigue as a contributor to road crashes and educate them about driver fatigue, the symptoms and strategies to combat it. Northampton Lions are looking at initially committing to a 2 year period where 10 driver reviver sites will be organised. The grant will be used to refurbish an existing caravan as well as purchase items to be used on site in the delivery of the driver revivers.
Reducing Travel Speeds in the Shire of Plantagenet - Shire of Plantagenet - $18,425.00
It is acknowledged that speed is an issue in the Shire of Plantagenet and therefore the Council itself is seeking a more significant role in road safety. In addition to hopefully purchasing the Road Safety Speed Display Trailer, the Shire is therefore also involved in the formation of a RoadWise Committee. The proposed project includes the purchase of the speed trailer along with a public education and media campaign. This will allow the Shire to take a leading role in addressing the issues relating to road trauma, which has a devastating impact on the community. The safety speed display trailer will be used at a number of locations throughout the Shire where speeding is an issue. It is proposed that it will be places at road works, school zones and community events such as the Porongorup Wine Festival to nameĀ a few, where there is a high level of exposure to promote lower travel speeds. When utilised at these locations, the trailer will be used as an educational tool to display such things as road safet messages and also messages in line with the Road Safety Council campaigns - to maximise their impact. Another activity that would be carried out in relation to the safety speed display trailer is a pre and post implementation survey to measure the knowledge and attitudes of the general public about lowering travel speeds. Medi would be engaged to run articles relating to the projext. The Plantagenet News, Albany Advertiser and Shire Flyer would be the main media outlets used in doing this.
Road signs that show Bunbury cares - Bunbury RoadWise Committee - $7,136.00
Most road signs lose their value and may be ignored after they have been seen a few times and road safety message signs are no different. This project overcomes this problem by creating sign panels in high exposure areas on highways where the message may be changed at any time. Similar but not the same as the Police LATES signs, the 'Bunbury Care about You' signs are intended to represent the voice of the Bunbury Community and speak to the passing driver with personal messages on the major topics of road safety - speeding, wearing of seatbelts, fatigue and drink driving. An initial set of messages have been put together but the sign system allows for any number of different messages to be displayed on the planned eight panels, located on the main entry and exit points to Bunbury. The messages are directed at the driver intending to change behaviour in a personal way. All sign panels carry other personal messages. The signs will be supported during campaigns with the distribution of educational materials and media information though the Committee, at times, to match the theme displayed on the sign. the coordination of local enforcement will be done by the Bunbury police attendance at the City of Bunbury RoadWise Committee.
