Road Safety Network
The greatest strength of the RoadWise Program is its network of people which includes RoadWise Committees and strong relationships with many stakeholder agencies.
Committees
RoadWise Committees are a partnership approach to addressing road safety issues at a community level. There are established RoadWise Committees throughout the State, both metropolitan and regional. The committees provide a forum where local issues can be discussed and a network of people can work to develop and deliver community based education campaigns. Through these committees local coordination of road safety education, engineering and enforcement efforts are enhanced.
Office of Road Safety
The Office of Road Safety (ORS) coordinates road safety policy in Western Australia and develops and implements mass media campaigns. ORS also produces and distributes educational materials such as brochures, posters and litter bags for use by RoadWise and other agencies.
Main Roads WA
Main Roads WA is represented on many RoadWise Committees and provides expert advice on a range of issues. A representative of Main Roads WA sits on the Road Safety Council, the Road Safety Council Officers Support Group and most Road Safety Taskforces.
WA Police
The Western Australian Police works to make Western Australia a safe and secure place in which to live. It contributes to road safety through enforcement and other traffic management and road safety activities. RoadWise works closely with the WA Police, which is represented on most RoadWise Committees, to enhance its activities. The WA Police is also part of the Road Safety Council and the Road Safety Council Officers Support Group.
Department of Education and Training
Education is a key aspect of road safety. Children and young people develop attitudes towards road safety during their early years. They require road safety education programs that ensure they develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to avoid or reduce potential harm of unsafe road use. Through the Road Aware Program, all students in Western Australia have access to comprehensive road safety education programs. RoadWise supports the activities of Road Aware by assisting in the implementation of some of its programs.
Department of Health
Road Safety has been recognised as a major health issue worldwide with the World Health Organisation dedicating the 2004 World Health Day to road safety. RoadWise works in partnership with health promotion officers throughout the State to implement community road safety education strategies. The Department of Health also provides input as a member of the Road Safety Council and the Road Safety Council Officers Support Group.
Department of Planning and Infrastructure
The Department of Planning and Infrastructure works closely with other agencies on issues such as the Graduated Driver Training and Licensing Scheme. It aims to create sustainable solutions for land, transport and infrastructure planning and delivery, which will benefit the community. The Department is represented on the Road Safety Council and the Road Safety Council Officers Support Group.
Service Clubs
Supporting the community at the local level, service clubs including Apex, Rotary and Lions are often involved in roads safety project activities. Many RoadWise Committees have representation from one or more of these clubs. Apex is also represented on the Local Government and Community Road Safety Committee.
Community Groups
Community Groups are a vital part of the Road Safety Network. Groups such as the Country Women’s Association of WA are represented on many committees.
Others
RoadWise works with many other organisations and groups such as Royal Automobile Club of WA, Insurance Commission of WA, Worksafe WA, Injury Control Council and the Injury Research Centre.
