Road Safety Around Schools
The WA Local Government Association’s RoadWise Program has launched the Road Safety Around Schools Guidelines.
The guidelines are a comprehensive package of information, tools and advice to assist Local Governments and school communities to identify and address traffic management and road safety issues around schools.
Local Governments are encouraged to use the guidelines and distribute to their schools. Support and advice on using the guidelines is available from RoadWise Regional Road Safety Officers.
Two editions of the guidelines have been developed - a Local Government edition and a Schools edition. The documents, along with other key resources can be downloaded below:

The School Road Safety Survey Access database (above) is intended to assist schools to compile the data collected as part of the school road safety survey. The database is provded above in a WinZip format for download by schools. A comprehensive user guide is also provided above. Safe Routes to School paint requirements
Schools wishing to implement the Safe Routes to Schools initiative outlined in the Guildenes for Road Safety Around Schools may like to use the following paint on footpaths:
- Wattyl Pascol Sunscreen Low Sheen - Signal Red - R13
- Wattyl Pascol Sunscreen Low Sheen- Ultramarine Blue - B21
- Wattyl Pascol Sunscreen Low Sheen - Bright Yellow - Y14
This paint has proved the most successful for this project.

Walk Safely to School Day
Children across Western Australia will be urged to walk to school on Walk Safely to School Day, held this year on Friday 2 May.
This national, annual event sees many thousands of primary and junior primary school-aged children walking to and from school with their parents and carers. Last year nearly 100 schools across Western Australia took part – about 26,000 students.
Packages of posters and stickers will be sent to every school in the State and local councils, schools and school organisations are invited to organise special events for the day, such as a healthy breakfast.
Children who eat a healthy breakfast can get so much more out of the day. Breakfast gets the metabolism going and prevents a slump in concentration during late morning.
The objectives of Walk Safely to School Day is:
- To instill healthy lifestyle habits at an early age
- To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.
- To reduce traffic congestion and emissions around schools
Good habits start young and safe pedestrian behaviour, healthy exercise and eating are encouraged by health and fitness professionals.
Walk Safely To School Day is organised by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, which is supported by the Australian Government, the National Heart Foundation, the Cancer Council, Diabetes Australia, beyondblue and Planet Ark.
Schools are also invited to register their participation on the walk.com.au website.
